Sorry for the lack of posts due to hot weather, catching up on Desperate Romantics and general laziness!

* Currently reading The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff – a novel about religious polygamy.

* Had mushroom soup and finger sandwiches at Liberty’s tearoom yesterday.

* Also – spotted my dream road to live in featured in the Desperate Romantics (Lizzie Siddal’s family lived here) – Roupell St in Waterloo which is always featured in period dramas. Imagine living there!

I am so enthralled by Alan Ball’s (of Six Feet Under) current work of art right now. True Blood is an American series detailing the co-existence of  vampires and humans in Bon Temps a fictional sleepy Louisiana town. Vampires have recently ‘come out of the coffin’ and revealed themselves to the world due to a synthetic blood drink created by the Japanese which will supposedly make them safe to humans.

The storyline centers around a waitress and her friends in a typical Southern bar surrounded by swampy marshland and steamy forests. Each episode bubbles and pulses with a reckless energy that is so original. This coupled with underlying themes of religious fanaticism, prejudice, and clever stereotypes makes a bombshell of a show. It’s truly a work of art.

I especially love the spooky, swampy imagery of the opening sequence created by Digital Kitchen. The piece intends to to intermingle contradictory images of sex, violence and religion and display them from the point of view of  a supernatural, predatory creature observing human beings from the shadows. The sequence also explores ideas of redemption and forgiveness, and progresses from morning to night and to culminates in a baptism.
