Under Foot…

We have sooo many little things to think about now that we are finally moving into our own home and will be soon decorating… the perfect taps, the perfect door handles and the perfect paint….ohhh the decisions and the pressure to get it right.

One things that i’m having a lot of trouble with is thinking about the bathroom – surely the most functional space in the home with little room for much creativity. The carefully choosing of neutral tiles upon neutral walls can drive any sane person mad!

So i’ve been thinking that the answer to taking the focus off the neutral decor is statement tiles! Walking barefoot into a bathroom on a dreary cold morning, I can’t think of anything nicer than being greeted by any of these smart and striking hand made tiles by Italian brand Made a Mano and Moroccan Popham Design.

Vintage Garland

These vintage style garlands made from hand formed ceramic beads are such a sweet alternative to traditional Christmas decorations and work all year round. Made by artist Angela Hodgkins they can be bought from her online store OUI.

Angela also creates one-of-a-kind soy candles using hand-thrown pots painted by hand in mid-century inspired graphic patterns. I love the delicate and speckled patterns on the beads and candles and Angela’s pretty combination of colour.

Necklaces from Bailey Doesn’t Bark

I love re-visiting the site of one of my old favourites – I used to be obsessed with Bailey Doesn’t Bark’s unusual style a few years ago… they are known for their simple ceramics decorated with sweet bugs and trailing ants.

Since my last visit they have added a small collection of exquisite jewelery with porcelain details of navy illustrations – which are obviously proving to be popular as every one is currently sold out! Check back soon though – i will be!

The Rosenfield Collection

The trend for collecting and sharing collections has really been gathering pace the last few years. I’ve been seeing exciting examples cropping up everywhere from events like The Museum of Everything which curates wondrously themed exhibitions each year and Miracles and Charms at The Wellcome Collection [see previous post].

What’s really nice to discover however is the odd private collection spied online with passionate collectors obsessively documenting their Achilles heel.

I happened upon the insanely covetable ceramics archive of anonymous collectors David and Louise Rosenfield with no more information given about themselves aside from the words “This site currently contains 1,864 works by 413 artists. This represents a small portion of the collection. We’re adding the work as fast as we can but the collection keeps growing. Who knows when we’ll catch up…”

From plates, to tumblers, to platters and bowls, glazed and unglazed, brightly coloured and of earthy hues, you will find them all here. Wouldn’t you love to see the space in which all 1,864 are stored…? [Edit: I have since discovered that they are based in Dallas, Texas]

Potomak

Saw these lusciously painted ceramics by Italian Studio Potomak at Maison et Objet last weekend. It was one of those time’s when you gape like an idiot at the exhibitor and the display because there are no words to describe how beautiful the work is – and frankly it feels completely inappropriate to start trying to explain because you might just embarrass yourself by accidentally expressing how passionately you feel… so you just walk away in a daze – you know?

Delicate pastel washes and on trend soft metallic colour dominated the collection.
