Good morning! A quick roundup of today’s features before I continue – don’t miss Lauren’s lyrical review of ‘Parisans, An Adventure History of Paris’ at midday today – it’s a beauty!
Anyway, I literally couldn’t wait till Illustration Tuesday to share the magical work of Melissa Launay with you. I discovered her yesterday through a mutual friend and haven’t been able to stop thinking about her work since then.
Melissa describes her work’s intricacies perfectly as ‘influenced by the elegant lines of Japanese prints, the luxurious colours of arabesque and Indian motifs, the use of gold in Byzantine illustrations and the flat impossible perspectives of medieval and early Renaissance art’.
I simply love the luscious patterns in every line and stroke of her work, it reminds me of something found in the recesses of the V&A archives or a precious edition of the Narnia Chronicles.
As well as landscapes, Melissa paints wonderfully mythical figurative art of young women who’s pale bodies create exquisite contrasts with intricately patterned backgrounds.
Melissa’s work also translates amazingly into murals, below is a mural for a London Bookbinding shop and further below a mural in Spain to celebrate the coming of Spring – magical!
