My Inside Life… Rohini Wahi

My-Inside-Life

Hi! I decided it was about time for me to take this questionnaire myself… My name’s Rohini Wahi, I’m a freelance stylist and writer and live in East London. As well as writing this blog, ‘The Beat That My Heart Skipped’, I write and style house features, analyse trends for trend prediction companies and style imagery for homewares brands and magazines.

I love living in London and seeing traces of history everywhere I look, its magical spirit is the inspiration for my work, and influences everything I do.

I collect… quirky illustrations, ceramics and books.

I cant live without… coffee.

My guilty pleasure is… eccentric period dramas and magic stories.

Our house is filled with… laptops…the sounds of the internet and general industriousness. My boyfriend and I both work from home from our respective offices, because we both run our own businesses  [he runs an awesome game development company Big Pixel Studios] – we are often on our laptops from the time we wake up, to the time we go to bed. It works for us!

I treasure… memories of lazy family holidays at my grandparents comfort filled home in Calcutta.

Right now I can’t stop thinking about… some really exciting shoots I am working on and my holiday to India in March.

Currently I am reading… I read about three books at time depending on what mood I’m in [it's pretty exhausting carrying them around] at the moment it’s The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney, From Dead to Worse [the Sookie Stackhouse Series] by Charlain Harris, and Illumination Night by Alice Hoffman

My favourite item of clothing is… my comfy black leggings, they go with everything and look good with anything!

At the top of my furniture wish list is…
soooo many things, a Trace Dining Table in wood or marble by British designers Naughtone, an iconic grey B&B Italia sofa, Tom Dixon ‘Beat’ lights…

The last thing that really inspired me was… Micheal Jackson’s ‘This is It’. I’ve always thought as an entertainer Michael was amazing but his concepts for his would-be tour were insane in the best way! He had futuristic suits made from never before developed light technology, 11 dancers on stage that slowly multiplied into an army of 11, 000 on the screen, a jacket that burst into flames when he threw it on the floor and so many more progressive ideas that blew me away.

On my desk are… a wooden holder with all my press invitations and paperwork inside and a space under for a stapler and my camera, a violet Pantone mug with pens, a ruler and a scalpel, a box with all my receipts, an Atherton Lin calender, and a round mirror propped up at the back of the desk against the wall, with Les Invasions Ephemeres feather stickers falling around the mirror so that when I look up into it, it looks like feathers are falling around my head : )

This weekend I will… work on the blog, eat some good food and go to see Decode at the V&A.

Tonight I must… cook dinner and work on the blog whilst watching something utterly trashy!

I love what I do because… every day and every hour is different, sometimes I laugh out loud with glee because I can’t believe I get to do what I do!

Like the photo made me laugh! Why there is not a photo of me on your desk makes me sad. Shall I send you an autographed one?

Well!!! It was the only decent photo i could find – but apparently not ‘decent’ enough! You may notice that the cocktail glass is empty…

You are very welcome! That is so nice to know that it brings you such inspiration, it’s the only reason I do this so it’s amazing to hear from you.

I was nervous to do this interview myself but thought since I reveal and write about so many other creatives everyday it was only fair to reveal a little of myself!

I have often wondered whether this is your work because you manage to pack so much in every day. I love your blog, I do not always like everything that you show, but it is always interesting and that is good (not only for my bank account). My daughter wants to know how you got into doing your shoots.
Thank you for your blog.

I have only just started reading blogs. My first was domestic sluttery. However, I really find your design blog so aesthetically pleasing and there is a real dignity in the way you present things. Every day, I have a look at what you put up for people’s interest and it is clear to see that it is very thoughtfully chosen. Many thanks and best wishes.

Hi Ali, thankyou, I do pack a lot into every day, with the blog and with my regular work, but I love it!

I would say that every Stylist spends many years doing work experience prior to being able to work on their own shoots. If your daughter is interested in being a stylist or even generally working on interiors magazines which involves being on location too, I would recommend getting in touch with her favourite magazines and enquiring about work experience. Every single magazine offers work experience for varying period of time between 4-6 months is often the minimum. The key is to start writing to them asap as their is usually a long waiting list, but sometimes you get lucky! This is generally the way you get a foot into the industry and learn a lot about what you like and don’t like on the way. A Stylist by the way is someone who comes up with the concepts of shoots and sources the products.

I started by doing work experience at The World of Interiors, Living Etc and Elle Decoration during my Gap year from University. I kept up all my contacts when I went back to university and assisted stylists I had met in my spare time [this pays quite well, between £60-£120 a day depending on the type of project]. I would say it took me about 2 years to truly learn the ropes and begin feeling like I might be ready.

All this experience gives you confidence in knowing the industry and how it works. Ultimately on shoots where there are teams of Photographers, Stylists and their respective assistants, you build up relationships with the Photographer’s assistants along the way who also want to start doing their own work. You team up with them and begin collaborating, slowly building up a portfolio of work and your own style.

After I built up a good portfolio I got myself an Agent – http://www.refresh-agency.com whom I now work with to find me creative work.

Everyone takes a slightly different path and it might be a faster or slower track to your ultimate goal, but it’s totally worth it when you do!

Ali – what does your daughter do now?

Hi Gillian, thankyou, thankyou! This blog is essentially an extension of myself, so yes everything is very carefully chosen and I am so happy others respond so well to what I find interesting.

I am so jealous that you have only just started reading blogs! You have a whole exciting world to discover! Do come back and comment soon. Rohini x

Thanks Rohini, I thought I might share a website/ shop that I have bought from several times.

http://www.lumadirect.com/index.asp

It is a fairtrade shop in London that sells luxurious products that come from many world-wide sources. I love beautiful things, but I also try and consider where things come from. I thought you may be interested in featuring it sometime.

I am really enjoying reading these different blogs, they are something nice to look forward to during the day.

Hello, thank you so much for your comment. My daughter has just chosen her GCSE options; we have discovered blods in the last couple of months – wherre were we? Why did no-one tell us about this? My daughter would like her own blog for her birthday and who am I to stand in her way? Great advice about the work experience, they do that in schools now and we will get writing.
Thank s again

hey this is Ali’s daughter
thanks for the work experience tip, it should come in very useful as I can’t decide what to do. At the moment i think I might go to a primary school and try out teaching. I’ll probably just get stuck sharpening pencils or something, so it might not be so amazing.

Hey Fizzy – no worries – oddly I did a stint in an American Primary School during some college holidays once [i was visiting family and I was bored] – I loved it! I got to do art projects with the kids and it was really fulfilling! Have fun! : )
