Ceramic Art London 2010

As promised, here is my pick of the jucy-est, most covetable ceramics at this years Ceramic Art London…

My absolute favourite Louisa Taylor was first on my route – displaying her gorgeous pastel Supper Set, which to me is the ultimate in ceramic collectables. She also showed off some new small vase designs whose colours faded with their graduation.

Next, was a surprise new discovery in the form of Kate O Connel. Kate takes inspiration from traditional tableware designs, enlarges their scales in patterns and forms and shatters the object to create something entirely new. Shards of giant china are used as platters and bowls in a new way.

Ikuko Iwamoto displayed wonderfully curious objects, organic looking vases and bubble forms with spikes…

I was delighted to see the wonderful work of Adam Buick in person, I’ve been a fan of his moon jars for a while now and it was such a pleasure to see the beauties in the flesh.

One of my new favourites is the work of James and Tilla Walters, purely for the fact they have one foot in realms of traditional craft form with their lovely earthy glazed vessels, and one foot in current trends by highlighting all their vessels in neon hues! If you look closely, details, rims, and underneaths of all the subtle vessels are brought to life with licks of orange, electric blues and yellows.

The lovely Virginia Graham was there showing off some elaborate eclectic new teapots amongst other pretties.

Another new favourite was the most humble and talented Derek Wilson who explained that it was his first time exhibiting anywhere and that he was pretty new to this!!! His simple and striking stall and his functional but exquisite products just blew me away, I can’t wait to see where his path takes him next…

Akiko Hirai is another veteran ceramist who’s work I have admired but saw in person for this first time at CAL. Akiko creates the most beautiful handmade looking textured pottery, its beauty often enhanced by intricately crackled glazes inside. Her work really looks like it’s grown straight from the ground!

I’m not usually a colourful ceramics girl, but these painterly works from Lisa Katzenstein just drew me in. Don’t they look like they were painted by a contemporary Van Gogh?

Finally Andrea Walsh, who’s work I didn’t manage to capture properly, but her gold rimmed vessels were simply angelic. Take a look at her work here.
