I’m off to the Albion cafe in Shoreditch for a meeting this morning. It’s one of my favourite places for a breakfast in London so I thought I’d share…
Another brilliant creation from Terence Conran, the Albion is a cross between a cafe and canteen, on the corner of Boundary Street. Located just off bustling Shoreditch High Street, its white and wholesome country appearance initially strikes you as an apparition in the middle of the East End.
The entrance to the cafe is in fact a small grocers and delicatessan stocking established English brands such as Maldon Salt and HP Sauce to Daylesford Organic. The shelves are stocked with a range of everyday items such as jams, biscuits and teas, along with special occasion Prestat chocolate treats and cooks essentials like stocks and goose fat.
Seasonal fruit and vegetables are what you see on the street side, in stylised wooden creates – some of which come from the kitchen garden at Barton Court, Terence Conran’s country home, plus cheeses and creamery items from Neal’s Yard Dairy.
The inside of the cafe is filled with natural light and features on-trend utilitarian white brick walls, white wood paneling and bentwood coat stands – and food is served on plain white crockery accessorised with metal canteen jugs and cutlery. Everything of course exudes a distincly iconic British feel with teapots arriving snug with knitted tea cosies and bottles of HP sauce on the table.
Delicious and hearty food such as chicken and ham pie, mussels in cider, kedgeree, deviled kidneys and tasty English breakfasts are served.
