Old home, New horizons…

As most people know we will be in a new home this weekend. I wanted to pay a little homage to the wonderful place we’ve lived in for the past year…

Up until now, my boyfriend David and I have lived in a leafy part of East London in a two bedroom flat with great parque floors. When we picked our place, natural light was essential, when you’re working from home most days you need to feel like you’re connected with the outside world. Most stylist’s homes are amazingly styled spaces that you could only dream about living in, but I am a neat freak and as much as I would love to have niches full of quirky arrangements, the dusting would drive me insane! So welcome to our simple but much loved soon to be ex-home!

Our flat was rented so there wasn’t much we could have done apart from furnish it, but I don’t think I would have changed much except for maybe paint a few walls a light grey. This was the one place out of the many we looked at that was neutrally decorated, every other space would be neutral but then have some wacky bathroom or kitchen tiling going on!

We furnished the space on a pretty tight budget but found it hard to want new things as these served us so well!

[above] Our living area was our favourite space, calm and restful and where I would retire to after a day’s work in my office next door. The sideboard above we found in the ‘Bargain’ section of Ikea, it’s one of our favourite pieces and fits in with the sensibility of the flat perfectly. The wide and comfy sofa is from Dwell and the coffee table a find in David’s grandparents loft!

[above] We also dined in the living area. This is a great spot to sit and look out at the bustling high street. We were so lucky to have this tree outside our window, in the summer its leaves are like jewels and it feels like we are living high up in trees. It would completely transform our space.

music1

[above] David is a game developer and musician so as well as a living/dining area the living room doubled as his ’studio’ on the evenings and weekends. I like the way his instruments look in the flat [see keyboard next to couch above].

[above] Our bedroom is simple and serene and situated in the quietest corner of the flat. The bed is from Dwell and the side tables were horrible old white Ikea ones which I painted in a Farrow and Ball sandy colour. The quilt was a present from a friend of ours – it’s great for wintry nights.

[above] This is my office where I can let the playful side of me loose! I have two desks, the smaller for my laptop and the larger to spread out and sketch ideas on. The big paper light is by Paola Navone and the bookshelves house a portion of my art collection. The glass dome is from a styling project and houses an ever-changing collection of favourite objects. The little cupboard stores our towels and linen.

[above] Our guest bed is in my office and pulls out to make a double. I love practicality and ease so the bed doubles as storage with drawers underneath and the bedside table houses a multi-plug for all bedside needs [laptop hub, phone charger etc. I know its a weird thing to point out but I like to be informed on silly things like that!].

cutlery

[above] Some sneak peeks into my kitchen cupboards and draws, I always love seeing what crockery people have and how it looks when all put together. The gold cutlery is from Zara Home.

Of course all these things are now neatly packed away in boxes or dismantled for our move. We are in fact moving just down the road from here to a lovely Georgian flat which is completely different from this modern one. It has vast ceilings and tall windows, large townhouse doors and a giant gold doorknob on the front door for hanging a wreath this Christmas!

We are so sad to leave this lovely home that has so many good memories for us, but happy to move onto new horizons. I am especially looking forward to seeing how our belongings look in a new space and because this place needs a little more work that the last [dark corridors, dated bathroom + kitchen] I am eager for some new challenges! I plan on keeping you all posted with makeover developments… So long old home, hello new horizons!
