Pelpa Friends

Pelpa

Hello! Who are these curious creatures? Flor Panichelli, a London based paper artist creates these wonderful finger puppets from ‘Pelpa’ the Spanish slang for paper.

Originally from Lunfardo in Buenos Aires, [a town which appeared at the end of the 19th century, the result of contact between European immigrants and natives] Flor worked for eight years among documents of that period at the Buenos Aires Historical Archive. Paper has been a part of Flor’s daily context and life for a long time, and through creating these ‘pelpa objects’, she evokes a certain nostalgia.

Flor’s collection consists of melancholy girls and chic stern women, whimsical men with moustaches and forest dwellers. The detail captured in each puppet is astounding…

I feel terrible for exposing them in such a manner, but these ‘unclothed’ puppets are so sweet. Their sizes vary from 10cm-17cm, depending on their character. You can buy Flors work here and read about all of her characters [in English and Spanish] here.
