Our final stop of press previews this week was Scandinavian design retailer Skandium. I am always SO excited to see what they will reveal each season, because every single one of their brands is so special. That evening they were showcasing Muuto, Marimekko and iittala…
First up iittala’s Spring/Summer 09 range. We practically squealed when we were shown the new Vitrini range of modular storage by glass designer Anu Pettinen. Available in a range of jewel colours, these thick glass ‘boxes’ are beautiful and heavy to the touch and had a real retro quality to them. If you notice they come in options of wood, metal or glass bases, how would you choose? Although I have to say the wood veneer bases were particularly stunning.
Next veteran Finnish designer Oiva Toikka is celebrating his 50 years within the company with several new anniversary pieces, new versions of his iconic birds, and new designs of his Kastehelmi pressed glass range. Also iitalla is introducing a water inspired colourway of their current glassware ranges in ‘cobalt blues’ and ‘water greens’.
Marimekko as usual had such an abundance of new textiles and textile based products to show due to their enormous pattern archive, that poor Yvonne [their lovely sales director] was practically buried in fabric whilst showing us the range!
I love this Kankaat print by Erja Hirvi. What I admire about Marimekko is that they are unashamedly Finnish and are so confident in their brilliance, they don’t feel the need to explain their designs in English, but I am pretty convinced that these are inspired by beautiful melons sliced open…
And this lovely bold print called Max ja Moritz, If I recall correctly is inspired by the folklore of a traditional berry tree in Finland…
Sigh – new pastel colours of Mari’s New Bags – I am only just getting over their navy autumn colourway!
Oh and these gorgeous and graphic textured pillows! Out of everything I saw these are going on my list of key pieces for the home, I don’t know why i love them the most, I just do!
And finally Muuto, whos lovely Press agent had flown in from Copenhagen for two days just to say hello! Muuto are a young brand who handpick the best new Nordic designers, Harri Koskinen, Louise Campbell and Norway Says, to name a few, and trust them with the mission to create new and clever takes on everyday objects. Muuto’s products represent the essence of modern Scandinavian design by combining aesthetics and functionality with a new perspective. Their byline is ‘New Nordic’ which has a spectacularly poetic ring to it.
We took a look at their existing beautiful collection and a few new design prototypes on paper [watch this space for some stunning ‘New Nordic’ furniture], but my favourite was a brand new majestic purple colourway of their strong and simple E27 light. Look at the lines, look at the graceful curves!
Some great stuff here, another reason to look forward to the New Year!
