Fugas Lusas is a delicatessen and cafe in Setúbal, Portugal. Designed by Portuguese practice EXTRASTUDIO Arquitectura, the focal feature is its laser cut plywood ceiling.
Commissioned by a young Economics professor to develop a concept for a Portuguese delicacies shop that would also work as a café, the project represents an effort to revitalize the historical district of Setúbal, creating a new meeting point in the city.
I love the juxtaposition of a rambling old Spanish square and design of the contemporary cafe, with its bright white modern chairs spilling out onto the cobbled streets.
Inside, old hardwood chairs sit aside exquisite marble tables, and shelves carved out of the thick historical walls display produce in the most abundant of manners. Beautiful.
