British artist Su Blackwell is one of my favourite paper artists, she creates the most fantastical and ethereal works using old books intricately cut into three-dimensional works of art. When I started writing this post it was an introduction to Su’s ‘A Day With…’ feature but there was just too much to say about her work to fit into an introduction!
Su’s work is like stepping into a cosy winter fairytale. Because her paper works are combined with other mediums like light and mechanics, the viewer is given an even more magical experience. Paper children open up paper boxes spilling out light, and paper merry-go-rounds spin around on tops of open books, twelve princesses dance out from a books pages and Alice comes up through a whirlpool rabbit hole…
Su has so many mesmerising works, I found it really hard to edit down imagery to share with you so please humour me! Tune in later today for ‘A Day With…Su Blackwell’ when she shares a trip to New York with us during the first annual Paper Ball at the Museum of Arts and Design.
