True Blood

I am so enthralled by Alan Ball’s (of Six Feet Under) current work of art right now. True Blood is an American series detailing the co-existence of  vampires and humans in Bon Temps a fictional sleepy Louisiana town. Vampires have recently ‘come out of the coffin’ and revealed themselves to the world due to a synthetic blood drink created by the Japanese which will supposedly make them safe to humans.

The storyline centers around a waitress and her friends in a typical Southern bar surrounded by swampy marshland and steamy forests. Each episode bubbles and pulses with a reckless energy that is so original. This coupled with underlying themes of religious fanaticism, prejudice, and clever stereotypes makes a bombshell of a show. It’s truly a work of art.

I especially love the spooky, swampy imagery of the opening sequence created by Digital Kitchen. The piece intends to to intermingle contradictory images of sex, violence and religion and display them from the point of view of  a supernatural, predatory creature observing human beings from the shadows. The sequence also explores ideas of redemption and forgiveness, and progresses from morning to night and to culminates in a baptism.

Forest Dwelling…

Back from David’s sister in-law to be’s Hen Party…which truthfully I was dreading as it was held in Centre Parcs. I had never been anywhere like it and never had a desire to…however it turned out to be one of the best holidays of my life! Centre Parcs in Suffolk is a self contained holiday community deep inside Elveden Forest, teaming with tame wildlife and breathtaking woodland views, great restaurants and endless activities. The weather was amazing and we  spent the whole weekend laughing : )

Away…

I am heading out of London for the weekend today to an undisclosed location for a friend’s wedding party. Seems that all of my holidays have been secret missions lately! Looking forward to a long girls only weekend away – I don’t think I’ve ever been on one before…

Anyway I will leave you with you some sweet Friday thoughts from an amazing doughnut company I came across in blogland – Voodoo Doughnuts – how good and crazy do these look??? Unfortunately these are only found in Portland Oregon – I need to find somewhere like this in London! Happy weekend!

Revolutionary Road

A good interior to me is equal to how foodies feel when they put a spoonful of exquisite buttery pastry in their mouth, or watch the beginnings of a chocolate souffle on a cookery channel…that melting, swooning, contented, undulating emotion. I feel the same way when I see a breathtaking interior in a film or photograph…is there such a thing as interior porn???

Well if there is, I found it a few nights ago when we watched the film Revolutionary Road, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Based on the first novel of Richard Yates. Set in 1955, it centers on the hopes and aspirations of Frank and April Wheeler, self-assured suburbanites who see themselves as very different from their neighbors in the Revolutionary Hill Estates. As the film progresses they discover they are not as different as they would like to believe and frustrations begin to arise. It is an indictment of American life in the 1950s when there was a general lust for conformity all over the country. Such a sad and beautiful film – it’s so still and so quietly complex it reminds me of something Ian McEwan might create.

Anyway, the cinematography was immaculate. Each scene a quiet masterpiece and I fell in love with the elegant decor of the the 1950’s cookie cutter homes…my favourite scenes were the stunning and peaceful ones without any people in, but i couldn’t find any online, you’ll have to watch and see for yourself! These images don’t do the film justice.
